MOL focusses on the distress underlying any particular symptom pattern rather than the symptoms themselves

A New Article on Psychology Today

I’ve added another article to my In Control blog on the Psychology Today website. You can find the article at: http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/in-control/201412/the-difficulty-self-control-is-conflict. The article is about the difficulties of self control and suggests that self control is difficult because it often reflects an underlying conflict. When people exert force or effort to achieve one goal (such as giving up smoking) and find that it’s hard to do, a plausible hypothesis for the difficulty is that it is difficult to achieve the goal because there’s another goal (such as to continue smoking) operating at the same time that the self-controlling person is not paying attention to. I hope you find the article interesting and helpful.
